Beautiful but one flaw
These are beautiful cups that are a pleasure to behold and are just fine for measuring wet ingredients. However, if one is measuring dry ingredients such as flour, you cannot level the flour off with a knife for precision. Instead of having each cup be the exact volume for each measurement, the cups have the measurements etched inside with the line well below the level of the top of the cup, making leveling off impossible. Admittedly, one should measure dry ingredients with a scale for greatest accuracy, but the cups are advertised as being good for a "multitude of baking ingredients" so I don't think that's true.
Ceramic cups, 5 stars...Melamine cups, 3 stars...There is a difference
There is a difference between the ceramic and melamine and it is crucial. I actually found my first ceramic set of these at a tag sale. I loved how you could measure wet and dry ingredients with the markings on the upper rim. I enjoyed the vintage look and the way they worked dipping into bags. I don't find the handles to be an issue as others stated. My fear was that the kids might drop them so I opted to purchase a second set in the melamine for them to use since I learned that replacing them if they broke would be quite expensive.
That is where I learned the difference. On the ceramic set the cups are set up to measure wet ingredients to the line markings on the upper rim and dry ingredients to the rim of the cup. This is missing on the melamine set where the measurement is simply stamped into the bottom of the cup. Now I understand why some stated they didnt work for them and others raved. I am going to take a sharpie and line mark them so they work just as my ceramic...
More pretty than practical
Sadly, as I am a fan of Nigella products, I am a little disappointed with these measuring cups. The handles are a bit small - not easy to grasp, and I feel another size between 1/2 and 1 cup would be very useful. Nonetheless, I still use them and take pleasure in using them because they are so beautiful.
